Please Note: All visitors must enter through the main entrance on Indiana Avenue.

Free Admission Mondays

We offer free admission the first Monday of each month. KVML is a Blue Star Museum in collaboration with the National Endowments of the Arts, which means we offer free admission to active military personnel and their families from Armed Forces Day until Labor Day.

Visiting and Tours

You do not need to RSVP in advance to visit the museum. Guided tours are once a day at 12 P.M. with an upcharge of $3 per person. Tours are available in both Spanish and French upon request with 48 hours advance notice. For large tour groups, please email [email protected]. Self guided audio tours are available at no extra cost. The museum store is open until closing time.

Parking

The KVML parking lot directly encompasses the south side of the building and wraps around behind the building. All parking is free and open except for the parking spots north of the building (staff parking).

Do I have to schedule an appointment to visit?

Reserving tour times is required only for guided tours. Walk-ins are allowed during our business hours.

How many people can be in one tour?

The optimal number of people who can be in one tour is 10-12. 

What options do I have for payment?

We accept Apple Pay, Samsung Pay, Google Pay, and all major credit cards through our Square tap card reader. We also accept cash and check.

Am I allowed to take pictures and record videos?

Yes! We encourage that you document your experience at KMVL and share it with your friends and family. Make sure to tag us on any social media if you post about your touring experience. Our social media can be found in the footer of any page.

How can I support KMVL?

You can support us by becoming a member or by donating. Being a member provides special privileges to events and merchandise from KVML. Donations allow us to continue the legacy of Kurt Vonnegut and his ideals.

How do I become a member?

To become a member, you can go to the ‘Support’ tab on the website navigation bar and find ‘Become a Member’. Being a member provides special privileges to events and merchandise from KVML. Once you become a member, you are more than just a visitor to KMVL- you are a part of our family.

Am I able to reserve the KMVL for special events?
We would love for you to consider us for a special event. Our home has hosted private events such as wedding receptions, team-building activities, and much more. We would love to be included in the best memories of life. Inquire at: [email protected]

Kathi Badertscher, PhD

Director of Graduate Programs at the IU Lilly Family School of Philanthropy
Kathi Badertscher, PhD, is Director of Graduate Programs at the IU Lilly Family School of Philanthropy. Dr. Badertscher teaches a variety of BA, MA, and doctoral courses, including Applying Ethics in Philanthropy and History of Philanthropy. She has participated in several Teaching Vonnegut workshops and is a member of the Kurt Vonnegut Museum and Library. Dr. Badertscher has been a guest speaker on ethics in philanthropy, including at the National Association of Charitable Gift Planners – Indianapolis Council; Association of Fundraising Professionals – Indiana Chapter; and Zhou Enlai School of Government, Nankai University, Tianjin, China. In 2019 she received IUPUI Office for Women, Women’s Leadership Award for Newcomer Faculty. In 2019 and 2020 she received the Lilly Family School of Philanthropy, Graduate Teaching Award.
Dr. Badertscher’s publications include “Fundraising for Advocacy and Social Change,” co-authored with Shariq Siddiqui in Achieving Excellence in Fundraising, 5th ed., 2022; “Insulin at 100: Indianapolis, Toronto, Woods Hole, and the ‘Insulin Road,’ co-authored with Christopher Rutty, Pharmacy in History (2020); and three articles in the Indiana Magazine of History: “A New Wishard Is on the Way,” “Evaline Holliday and the Work of Community Service,” and “Social Networks in Indianapolis during the Progressive Era.” Her chapters on social welfare history will appear in three upcoming edited volumes on the history of philanthropy, including “The Legacy of Edna Henry and Her Contributions to the IU School of Social Work,” Women at Indiana University: Views of the Past and the Future, edited by Andrea Walton, Indiana University Press, 2022 (forthcoming). Dr. Badertscher is also the Philanthropy and Nonprofits Consulting Editor for the forthcoming Digital Encyclopedia of Indianapolis, edited by David J. Bodenhamer and Elizabeth Van Allen, Indiana University Press, 2021. Dr. Badertscher is an active volunteer in the Indianapolis community. At present, she is a Coburn Place Safe Haven Board Member and a Children’s Bureau/Families First Brand and Marketing Advisor. Dr. Badertscher holds the MA in History from Indiana University and the MA and PhD in philanthropic studies from the Indiana University Lilly Family School of Philanthropy.
